Vince Gilligan Shares He Knows How The Apple TV+ Show Will Conclude... Currently.
The acclaimed writer-producer never anticipated that the Apple TV+ show would become a massive hit. “The viewers have been incredible,” he remarks. “It was unexpected the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
Now that Season 1 of the hit sci-fi show coming to an end—and the next chapter already in development—Gilligan and his team opened up about the audience reaction and whether it will impact the future direction of Pluribus.
Regarding the Overwhelming Fan Response
It would be easy to get sidetracked by the rampant praise and online debates regarding Pluribus. He is making a conscious effort to avoid both.
“It feels like force fed hot fudge sundaes and being in a state of bliss,” he says. “It's amazing, but I learn of it from others, and that's on purpose. Never in my life looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever intend to. Not because I don't care. It's a bottomless pit I know I would get lost in and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from the hardware store and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
In spite of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no way to avoid the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The most practical strategy is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“It is not our goal to change the plot,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not changed by audience chatter.”
“It's wiser to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan adds.
The Big Question: Does Vince Gilligan See the Conclusion of Pluribus?
Considering the writers aren’t being guided by audience theories, can we assume they already know how Pluribus will finally conclude? The answer is yes… in a way.
“There are some potential directions about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan says. “but we are always ready to throw out a good idea for a superior concept. That philosophy has guided us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we conceive of something superior and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
On the other hand, if plans fall through, director and writer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to fall back on.
“My recurring proposal is that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and the characters are inside it,” Smith jokes, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Of course, one could always use the legendary finales?
“I'd love for Carol to awaken beside Bob Newhart,” he jokes.
Pluribus can be watched on Apple TV.
