Two Cuba-bound Humanitarian Vessels Declared Missing following Leaving the Coast of Mexico.
A comprehensive rescue and recovery mission is currently in progress in the Caribbean Sea for a duo of unlocated boats carrying humanitarian supplies traveling from the Mexican coast to the island of Cuba.
Naval Search Operations Initiated
The Mexican government has dispatched naval teams and military search aircraft to locate the missing boats, which were transporting a minimum of nine total personnel, according to a military release.
The boats had been expected to arrive in the Cuban capital on the early part of the week, but there has been no communication from them and zero verification of their arrival, the navy said.
Background of Aid to Cuba
The Caribbean nation has depended significantly on aid convoys from Mexico over recent weeks, as the nation grapples with multiple power outages across the country.
"The crews and captains are experienced sailors, and both vessels are equipped with appropriate safety systems and emergency beacons," a representative for the convoy stated.
The nine individuals on board are nationals of France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Mexican authorities said it has opened communications with maritime rescue coordination centres from those nations along with their diplomatic representatives.
"We are working closely with the relevant authorities and continue to be hopeful in the ability of the crews to safely arrive in Havana," the statement continued.
Previous Humanitarian Mission
Previously that week, the government in Havana widely celebrated and warmly received another boat that had carried 14 tons of relief supplies to the country.
That boat, nicknamed "a new Granma" following the name of the boat in which Castro came back to Cuba to start the revolution in the 1950s, carried solar equipment, pharmaceuticals, baby formula, bikes and foodstuffs.
Larger Political Backdrop
Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have been at the forefront of efforts to bring essential supplies to Cuba since January, when a oil sanctions on the Communist-run nation began.
International organizations have since warned of "dire" lack of essential goods, with over 50,000 surgical procedures postponed in Cuba due to power shortages.
Political pressure have intensified in recent months, with remarks from several officials highlighting the delicate state of diplomatic ties.
Responding to certain comments, a senior official from Cuba stated firmly that "the socialist system of Cuba is non-negotiable."
Indications suggest that initial phases of discussions were initiated, although their ongoing development remains unclear.
The naval forces stated it was committed to using every available asset at its command to find the boats and ensure the security of the crews.
To date, there has been no official comment on the lost ships by the Cuban government.
