This Limited-Edition Pikachu Promo Seeks to Be Super Effective Against Speculators
Marking the arrival of a captivating new book Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology, a unique partnership is underway. The Pokémon Company and London's Natural History Museum will launch a temporary store featuring exclusive items. Enthusiasts will find offerings including plush toys, art prints, and writing supplies all drawing from the institution's aesthetic. The big draw, though, will be a limited-edition Pikachu card, given as a free bonus at the pop-up. The store will operate both on-site at the museum and its web counterpart from January 26 to April 19.
Pokécology Behind the Partnership
Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology represents a highly anticipated tome filled with beautiful artwork depicting Pokémon in their wild environments. The concept is what an in-world scientist might publish after trainers submit their data, alternatively what Charles Darwin could have sketched had the Galapagos teemed with flying-types instead of finches. Part of the charm stems from the book's serious treatment, treating Pokémon as a legitimate subject for inquiry. Writer Yoshinari Yonehara together with artist Chihiro Kinoshita each possess PhDs in ecology and behavioral science.
What Makes This Special Card Different
The company regularly to issue special edition cards for major tournaments and brand collaborations. A lot of these collector items typically highlight the famous electric rodent that acts as the franchise mascot. The factor setting this latest museum card however, is the distinctly bigger dimensions. While precise specs have not been immediately shared, availability will certainly be strictly limited, and customers limited to just one card with each transaction.
Curbing Speculator Interest
Per an official announcement, some of the pop-up items may also be available outside the museum walls. But, broader availability will only be specific stores in the UK. Importantly, collectors will not be able to purchase this promo through the online Pokémon Center. Although reseller interest is a given, the setup suggests they're going to have trouble hoarding mass quantities this time around. For those unable to attend, consider the upcoming Pokémon Fossil exhibit coming to Chicago in the coming months.
"All profits from purchases made in the museum store and its web shop, which covers these items, support the Natural History Museum’s charitable mission. That encompasses the research of hundreds of researchers who are scientific inquiry to discover answers to the global ecological crisis," the statement notes.
