The Porcine Pardon: Pig Named 6-7 Granted Clemency by Miami Dade County Leader.
Although not quite at the same level as sparing Thanksgiving turkeys, but the Miami-Dade County mayor had her own ceremonial pardon event this week by formally pardoning the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. She is worthy of this pardon. She has committed zero crimes,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with clear references to the vast quantity of executive clemencies issued since the beginning of a current administration.
“If we disregard eating six or seven apples per day,” she went on. “May this pig enjoy a long and happy life without fear.”
This ceremony, simultaneously observing and challenging the area's customary feast of consuming swine during the holidays, was founded to emulate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The pig, donated by a local firefighter, was given its name from the popular vernacular phrase of young people yelling “six seven” – originating from a rap song lyric – often seemingly at random. The craze became so pervasive that a major dictionary recently named “six-seven” its top term for the year.
A New Life
The pardoned swine is now destined to live out its days at a farm sanctuary “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“This swine clemency has become a cherished method to begin the festive period,” said the event host, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It represents the essence of Miami: vibrant, multicultural, and grounded in customs that bring people together. Each year, we are proud to celebrate tradition and kindness in a way unique to Miami.”
Participants enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach fritters and strong coffee as they toasted the pig's pardon.
