The people of Israel commemorate second anniversary of October 7th incident as Gaza peace negotiations proceed
People have gathered throughout the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-conducted attack on that fateful day in October 2023, as discussions advanced in Egypt over an end to the war in the Gaza Strip.
The assault led to more than 1,200 people killed and 251 others taken away to Gaza as prisoners. It was the single most fatal day for the Jewish community since the Second World War.
Israel responded by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has killed over 67,000 people, as reported by the region's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its figures are regarded as trustworthy by the UN and other international bodies.
"The aggressive opponents have caused great damage, but they have not overcome us," the leader added on Tuesday.
He also promised to "achieve all the objectives of the war: the release of all the captured, the elimination of the Hamas administration and the guarantee that Gaza will never again create a danger to Israel".
Remembrance Gatherings Across Israel
The government authorities rescheduled state memorials until mid-October - after the completion of the festive season - but gatherings still were held throughout the country on that day.
A remembrance service for the families of Israeli citizens killed in the Hamas assault was conducted in the coastal city. Put together by the families themselves, it was broadcast on Israeli TV networks.
Hours earlier, a minute's silence was held around the country.
Negotiation Discussions in Egypt
Meanwhile, both sides' delegations gathered in the Egyptian coastal city of the Egyptian city for a second day of mediated discussions to review the provisions of the agreement.
A senior Palestinian official involved in the negotiations indicated that an late session of indirect talks commenced at 7 PM local time.
The representative said the day's discussions ended without significant progress, amid conflicting views over the proposed Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas seeks to ensure Israel does not restart fighting after the opening period of the arrangement.
He noted that the talks are "challenging and have yet to produce any significant progress," but mentioned that mediators are working hard to narrow the disparities between the both parties.
Key Matters in Discussions
- An enduring ceasefire
- The swap of the hostages still detained by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
- The withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Plans for relief supplies provision
- Post-war management of the territory

"When we see everyone home returned, we can relax once more. Then we can begin to rebuild," she added.
In front of the leader's residence in Jerusalem, people congregated to express their backing for the loved ones of the abducted. Israel reports 48 continue in captivity in Gaza, twenty of whom are thought to be living.
