The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Chose the Wrong Popular RPG Show Track
This latest animated series, the most recent animated series from Critical Role, revealed a new introductory sequence. It features our favorite cast of misfits, outcasts, and criminals fighting hard and taking names, while teasing at several heart-wrenching personal histories for characters including the voice actor's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, the character Fjord.
All in all, the intro looks amazing. However, I felt that an element was lost in the song choice.
The intro uses "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar song composed by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. It's a track originating from the official score of that title, the second one put out by the production company's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great nostalgic option, and I suspect that fans of the sequel series will appreciate its presence.
Personally, The series' intro doesn't quite capture the hype and energy that accompanied the show's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", written by singer-songwriter the artist, was an instant classic in my view when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it only got better when co-founder Sam Riegel wrote words to the tune for the series' animated intro in 2018.
Including singing from Ashley Johnson, another performer, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the track was memorable and fun. Back then, I hadn't seen the second campaign at that point, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my phone. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you start an installment of adventurous fun.
The Mighty Nein's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the right notes in my opinion. It's a grand piece of music, but based on my understanding of this party, I can't help but feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.
Of course, the creators has already said that the animated show will have some changes and differences from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its intro seems to be among these.
The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on Prime Video from November 19. If you can't wait before that, or wish to prepare to get to know the characters of the second series, the original episodes are available on Spotify and YouTube.
