The beloved crime series AC-12 will make a comeback for its seventh season, announced by the broadcaster.

A brand new six-part series written by the show's creator will begin filming in Northern Ireland this spring, according to the network.

The actress shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, saying she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Her co-star remarked, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together next year."

The previous series concluded in recent years with a finale that attracted more than 17 million viewers. Speculation about a new season have been widespread ever since, but confirmation only arrived this week.

Fresh Obstacles for The Team

The seventh season will open with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and renamed as the new police oversight body, according to the announcement.

Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue tasked to tackle corruption within the law enforcement.

Their work "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, the trio will take on their "most sensitive case so far."

Fresh Face and Intricate Plot

An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer known for takedowns of criminal networks, is accused of abusing his position to become a sexual predator.

Yet, his case could be a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still active in the shadows, plot details suggested.

Speaking about the renewal, the creator said: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the show's fans."

"We're privileged to have had so many followers track the ups and downs of AC-12 over multiple series and we are thrilled to be returning for a seventh installment."

Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in the UK was thought to be over while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."

Actor Responses

The Scottish actor described appearing in the series as "a job of a lifetime".

"Not only the show's success but the colleagues I've worked with I now call dear friends."

"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he said.

The Nottingham-born actress stated: "It goes without saying I'm very happy Line of Duty is back! Can't wait to work with the creator, Compston and Dunbar again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor noted: "While anticipating the AC-12 days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together next year."

"Pleased with the announcement and looking forward to those unexpected plot developments."

Show History

The drama launched in the early 2010s and evolved into one of the most popular television series of the past ten years, featuring notable actors such as Thandiwe Newton.

The BBC has not yet announced when the new season will premiere.

The conclusion of season six drew the extended plot about the search for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and producers indicated at the time there were no intentions for further series.

Nevertheless, the corporation confirmed on Tuesday that a seventh series is now in development.
