Outrage as Beloved South African DJ Shot Dead in the City of Johannesburg.
A prominent South African radio and club DJ has been shot dead in the country's largest city Johannesburg, triggering widespread grief across a country battling entrenched crime.
Warrick Stock, who went by the name DJ Warras, was shot and killed in the central business district on Tuesday afternoon.
Police said the forty-year-old entertainer was approached by three suspects, one of whom shot at him before fleeing on foot.
The purpose behind the attack is unknown and no arrests have been made, police said.
The Fatal Incident
Law enforcement revealed that Stock was targeted as he was exiting a building in the vicinity of the city center landmark.
He had been present for hours at the property managing the installation of security systems, which had been illegally inhabited by squatters, it was reported.
"It is alleged the victim was approached by three unidentified men after he parked his car, and they opened fire at him before fleeing the scene on foot," an official report said.
Surveillance tape reportedly depicted a man with dreadlocked hair and dressed in what looked like a protective services outfit opening fire on Stock before running away.
The DJ sought to escape after he was wounded but fell down a short distance away.
It was further revealed that Stock had an unused firearm and nothing was taken during the incident.
Crucial forensic evidence, like cartridges, were discovered at the crime scene.
Appeal for Witnesses
Officials are asking anyone who saw the event who may have seen the suspects to assist with the investigation.
"Our information indicates they walked a long distance after the attack, and officers have been tracking them to establish their location," stated a police chief.
Outpouring of Grief
His sister, a close relative, stated the loved ones are reeling to come to terms with the loss.
"I am devastated. I don't have words," she stated.
"It is clear he was a champion for numerous individuals. He addressed issues courageously about subjects not many people were ready to tackle. This is a tremendous loss."
She appealed to the citizens to not sharing explicit content from the scene, saying this was an extremely painful time, especially for Stock's young family.
His Professional Legacy
Stock was the star of Ngicel' iVisa, a series that was broadcast on a popular local TV network.
Beyond his media career, Stock was active in various entrepreneurial pursuits, including private security, supplying VIP protection services and securing high-profile events across South Africa.
He was also said to be engaged in real estate operations and assisted with building evictions.
Official and Public Tributes
His death has shocked the country and prompted an outpouring of tributes from his audience, the government and political parties.
A government minister said he was furious and grief-stricken by Stock's untimely death.
"He expressed his views without fear or favour. He even challenged me and my actions as a minister. He was a true embodiment of who we ought to be," was his tribute.
A public representative stated the "brazen murder of DJ Warras in the middle of the day is a tragedy for all South Africans".
A industry leader noted that "DJ Warras was more than just a TV personality. He was a skilled narrator, a dedicated enthusiast of music and a kind-hearted individual who brought excitement and dynamism to every moment on screen. His artistic passion left an indefinable mark."
In a communication, the network he worked for affirmed Stock was known for his presence, approachability and sharp wit, adding that his memory "will endure".
