New York City Mayor Eric Adams Will Support Andrew Cuomo in New York City Mayoral Race

New York City Mayor Eric Adams revealed his intention to endorse former Governor Cuomo in the forthcoming mayoral race, despite an extended period of disagreements between the two Democratic figures.

A Surprising Reversal After Previous Accusations

Only weeks ago, Adams had strongly criticized Cuomo, labeling him a “snake and a untruthful person” and alleging of having “a career of pushing Black candidates out of races.” Nonetheless, in a new development, Mayor Adams reversed course, revealing he now intends to campaign alongside the former governor in areas where he maintains strong support.

“I think that it is imperative to really wake up the communities of color that have been affected by urban displacement on how vital this election is,” the mayor commented.

Adams continued, “Residents have seen their housing costs rise due to gentrification and they have been ignored in those neighborhoods, and I’m going to go to those communities and talk directly with community leaders and organizations and I will appear with the former governor in those areas and get them motivated.”

Election Landscape and Recent Events

The mayoral contest has so far been shaped by the contest between the former governor and progressive candidate Zohran Mamdani, whose rise in the polls has attracted attention globally and symbolized hopes for a revitalized progressive wing of the Democrats.

In a latest candidate forum, both Mamdani and GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa announced they would refuse the mayor's support if extended.

Earlier this year, the mayor had begun his bid for another term as an unaffiliated candidate after facing federal corruption charges which were later thrown out in return for his assistance with federal immigration raids across the city.

During a unrelated press conference on Thursday, the mayor responded to reporters asking about the endorsement plan by stating, “I'm meeting Andrew later today.”

This development came a day after the two politicians were seen attending a game side-by-side at the New York Knicks’ first game at Madison Square Garden, which occurred immediately following a contentious candidate debate.
