Matteo Cancellieri Demonstrates Flashing Moments of Brilliance in Bright Spot for Struggling Lazio

The mood at the Stadio Olimpico was decidedly gloomy this past Saturday. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a team that had allowed ten goals while managing only two goals in their most recent five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were finishing their latest protest in a continuous dispute with chairman Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Coming Unstitched?

Was Lazio's season unraveling, or did there exist a thread maintaining its structure from the beginning? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri to lead the team this summer, before he publicly stated that the club had failed to disclose a registration embargo they were facing for financial irregularities. Reports that he might quit were not true, but he did say that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Roman club became as messy during matches as they were off it, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the remaining opening fixtures, featuring the derby della Capitale. Throughout this period, observers have struggled to determine if progress is being made or collapsing.

The Youngster's Unexpected Return

A single player kept smiling through it. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to be at Lazio this season. He was on last season on loan at Parma and, early this summer, Lazio were attempting to stay there temporarily. The signing restriction led to a change of plans. They were unable to weaken their team without replacements.

Cancellieri arrived in the first place when Sarri was last in charge, at that time a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He made 20 Serie A appearances for Lazio in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those as a substitute. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who left after that campaign, would later accuse Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom only to bench him consistently."

Finding His True Position

Perhaps the manager was continuing to attempt to work out the nature of his skill set. Originally described as a wide forward when he joined, Cancellieri instead found himself the majority of that term as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. In 63 appearances on loan at Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
