Manchester United Poised to Sign German Forward Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific German forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from Bayern Munich.
A Major Acquisition for United
The forward, with six months left on her deal, is known as a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. Having scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. This signing will be seen as a marquee coup for the Women’s Super League side.
Departure from Bayern has been anticipated after she appeared to be holding back emotions while thanking the German club’s fans after a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
It was reported in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its top strikers. Per reports, all the paperwork for the move are now finalised.
Consistent Goalscoring to Boost United's Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s signing should represent a major uplift to United’s forward line. Schüller has been highly consistent in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.
- Over seven consecutive seasons, including the last term, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She claimed the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Steam at Old Trafford
Securing the German international comes at a time when United appear to be building momentum.
Recent on-pitch successes feature qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen additional business:
- The signing of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The new deal for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since arriving in 2023.
On the midfielder's new deal, a club official commented: “She has become a critical component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill enables her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has joined from a side from the NWSL, said: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
