Larian Studios Announce a Latest Divinity, Labeling it Their Most Ambitious RPG Yet

The anticipation surrounding this year's gaming ceremony reached a fever pitch, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious photo of a strange statue. The question has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is creating a brand-new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer featuring intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal opening of infernal gates.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio stated ahead of time that a follow-up to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not being worked on now.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This choice of words implies that the team is likely building a real-time experience rather than another tactical title. For now, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is highly rated and arguably it pioneered the modern wave of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for detailed worlds, branching plots, and flexible progression—traits that subsequently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is traditional swords and sorcery, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust bestowed upon the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is brimming with specialized paths you can achieve if you're playing as a specific type of character with a unique decision path.

The series is also wonderfully permissive, enabling players to improvise both in story and combat. Virtually all objectives can be solved in a variety of manners, often in lateral fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you heeded something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, players can anticipate more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
