Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Shooting

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will be OK after being shot in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during a recent discussion.

“That gives me comfort, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they’re in good spirits and he is expected to recover fully.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where he has been listed as in critical but steady condition.

“Don’t know just yet,” the coach said. “But I will say this, hearing him speak, he felt really upbeat. Furthermore, that’s what gives me comfort, because of his outlook and he expresses himself so positively.”

NYPD issued video stills earlier this week of a man sought in the incident involving Boyd. What prompted the attack is still being looked into and police mentioned it remains uncertain if Boyd was the intended victim. No one else was hurt according to reports.

The shooting happened in the early morning on Sunday morning about halfway between the famous arena and the iconic square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was transported to a local hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, according to authorities. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has been on his mind “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. The coach said that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a child.

“The first thing I thought about, he recently became a father,” Glenn noted. “And I’m thinking about his wife, considering his child and I want to make sure that he’s OK. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“A certain process is underway, I’ll keep private, but I’m happy at the fact that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd hasn’t played during the current season, his debut year with New York, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on 18 August with a shoulder issue that needed an operation.

Boyd came to New York as a free agent in spring and was projected as a significant contributor of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during preseason drills on early August and was taken away on a cart.

Boyd has remained around the team during the entire campaign while healing from his surgery.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn commented. “I mean, he is a regular at our matches. He’s fully engaged. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by the Vikings out of UT in 2019. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad subsequently. Boyd inked a single-season agreement worth $1.6m with New York in the spring.
