Information Available Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Shooting
A minimum of 16 people were killed and over 40 were wounded when gunmen fired on a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian police have called a act of terrorism.
As of the newest reports, officials have stated the death toll is 16, which includes one of the alleged attackers. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were taken to the hospital.
Those who died have not yet been publicly named, but police believe their ages span from 10 and 87 years old.
Listed are the victims who are known so far.
Eli Schlanger
London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Reportedly a father-of-five, he worked as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member asked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.
She described the events before the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire started. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.
The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having endured unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
The French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
Officially, the Foreign Minister declared that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the message read.
One Child
A child who was rushed to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.
One Israeli Citizen
A national of Israel was among those killed in the incident, as per reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with a number in critical condition. Those hurt include two police officers who responded to the attack.
A wounded man is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Hailed as a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he described the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He told reporters he heard “a large number” of shots.
“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
