Strong cold-season gusts caused walls to collapse onto fragile shelters sheltering people displaced by war in Gaza, claiming the lives of no fewer than 4 people. These deaths underscores the dangerous situation that continue after more than two years of devastating airstrikes and critical shortages of aid.

Ceasefire Provides Little Relief from Severe Weather

Although a truce has been active since last fall, humanitarian organizations state that residents do not have the sufficient shelter required to survive recurring cold-weather events.

Medical staff at Shifa hospital, which received the victims, said on this week that the deceased include a pair of adult females, a young female, and a male adult.

Separately, the Gaza health ministry stated on the same day that a 12-month-old infant succumbed of extreme cold overnight.

"The world has allowed us to experience death in all its forms," stated Bassel Hamouda following the funeral. "It’s true the bombing may have paused for now, but we have witnessed every conceivable cause of death in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Relatives Crushed in Shelter Collapse

According to Shifa hospital, three people of a one family — 72-year-old a man, his teenage granddaughter, and his son's wife — were killed when an 26-foot tall wall fell onto their dwelling in a coastal area of the city. At least five additional people were hurt in the incident.

Family members on Tuesday started clearing the debris that had entombed their loved ones and rebuilding the temporary homes for those who remained.

Aid Distribution and Continuing Emergency

The UN and its aid organization allies were handing out shelter kits, tarps, blankets and clothing as well as food and sanitation items across Gaza, stated the UN office for the coordination of humanitarian affairs.

Most of Palestinians reside in improvised shelters since their houses were reduced to rubble during the war. Aid groups say an insufficient amount of shelter materials are reaching Gaza during the truce.

Fatality Numbers After the Ceasefire

Local health authorities, part of the administration, says over 440 individuals have been fatally shot by Israeli fire and their remains brought to hospitals since the truce began. The ministry keeps comprehensive fatality records that are seen as largely accurate by international bodies and independent experts.

A spokesperson for UNICEF, representing the UN children’s agency Unicef, said on that day that no fewer than one hundred children under the age of 18 – sixty boys and 40 females – had been lost their lives after the ceasefire began due to military operations, such as drone strikes, airstrikes, tank shelling and use of bullets. Those figures, he said, represented incidents where enough information had been gathered to warrant documentation, but the total toll is believed to be higher. He added that hundreds of minors had been injured.

"While 'explosions and shootings have decreased' under the truce, they have not stopped," the spokesperson told journalists at a press conference in the Swiss city by video from Gaza City. "Therefore what the world now terms calm would be viewed as a crisis anywhere else," he concluded.

Another Winter of Struggle

Gaza’s population of over two million people has been struggling to keep the cold weather and bad weather at bay while enduring lack of assistance and a lack of more substantial transitional shelter, which is badly required throughout the colder season. This marks the 3rd cold season after the war between the state and the group started on 7 October 2023, when fighters attacked southern Israel and killed approximately twelve hundred individuals and took hostage 251 others into Gaza.

Gaza’s health ministry reports more than 71,400 Palestinians have been fatally injured in the subsequent military campaign.
