Ghostface OG Star the Actor Fears He Could Ruin the Franchise with the Seventh Installment.
The highly anticipated slasher sequel Scream 7 is set to arrive in theaters next year, and it is preparing for a massive family reunion. This latest installment marks the legendary comeback of Neve Campbell as final girl Sidney Prescott, following her absence from the previous film. She will, as usual, be joined by Courtney Cox as journalist Gail Weathers, but they won't be the only beloved characters returning to the fray.
"Returning to a character you played in your mid-20s when you're in your fifties was a challenge that kept me up at night," the actor reveals.
An Unexpected Return for Fallon Favorites
Reports have confirmed that a trio of distinct characters from earlier films are set to return in this new outing, despite dying in prior movies. The precise method of their return remains a mystery. Audiences should get ready for the reappearance of the beloved and nearly unkillable cop Dewey Riley, the director and Scream 3 antagonist Roman Bridger, and one half of the original murderous duo, Stu Macher.
The Pressure of Legendary Legacy
For Matthew Lillard, reprising his role in the series for the first occasion since a brief cameo is a dream come true, though he is terrified about the public's reaction. The actor clearly remembers the precise instant he received the news from the series creator.
"I recall the conversation. I remember the small talk. I remember him posing the question. That instance is permanently etched on my mind," he says. "So I'm really proud to be back. I'm really excited to be back."
Stu Macher has attained cult status in the decades since the 1996 movie was released, which made Lillard feeling quite nervous.
"The reality is, that's a part that lives in infamy, like it or not," he notes. "A part that is now embodied in each and every Scream mask that appears every October 31st."
The Fear of Letting Down the Fans
Now that filming has concluded, Lillard is waiting like the rest of us to see the final product. He admits to feeling immense anxiety about not wanting to be the one who damages the beloved series.
"The outcome is either a hit and people are thrilled to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard observes. "Going into it, I don't know if the film will gonna work. I don't know if people want to see me. I've definitely seen enough people state and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they returning to this trope?' So the reality is that I feel a lot of responsibility to not ruin the franchise. I hope people exiting Scream 7 and thinking, 'Well, that was terrible, and Matthew Lillard was the reason.'"
Speculation and Anticipation Abound
While countless dedicated fans are excited for Stu's return, the central mystery of how he and the others return persists. Maybe they exist as manifestations in Sidney's mind, similar to a previous plot device. Alternatively, perhaps they are in some way still living in a strange communal scenario. The chance of a self-referential story, reminiscent of earlier horror movies, also exists.
Audiences will discover the truth when Scream 7 arrives in theaters.
