We are analyzing video footage and photographs shared this morning that depict the aftermath of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive blast that Russian officials say fatally injured a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that exploded and that he later died to his wounds. A probe is under way.
The initial step to check the site of where the pictures originated was based on posts saying the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to corroborate the unique yellow hue of a adjacent residential complex captured in the footage.
Locating additional structures, lamp-posts and the street layout confirmed where the footage were taken.
We also checked that the video clips were new and that the visuals had not been manipulated.
