American flight controllers are increasingly seeking additional employment and calling in sick, as they remain on duty unpaid amid the federal closure, the transportation secretary has announced.

"The controllers are becoming strained," the official told Fox News on the weekend, as some flights were halted on the Californian coast due to staffing shortages.

After the federal closure on October 1st, air traffic controllers, who are deemed essential workers, were instructed to continue performing their duties uncompensated.

But some have been missing, causing terminals to halt or reduce their flight operations, which has added to delays due to weather and additional factors.

More than 3,000 American flights were delayed on Sunday, and the secretary stated he anticipates the situation to grow worse.

"I observe the stress," he remarked in an interview on a weekend program, noting that he had spoken to multiple professionals to listen to their concerns directly.

"They're taking side jobs, they're out there searching, 'Should I drive Uber, am I able to find an alternative of earnings to cover expenses?'" he added.

The secretary added that on Saturday twenty-two notifications at airfields indicated travel would be held up due to a shortage of employees - one of the highest since the closure started.

The American federal closure entered its 26th day on the weekend, making it the second most extended shutdown in history.

He has repeatedly warned that flight authorities would slow down the quantity of aircraft in the air if there is a shortage of safety personnel.

In his conversation, he would not answer straightforwardly when questioned if it was secure to fly in the US, and instead made a direct appeal to the professionals.

"I require my controllers concentrating on the airspace, not on the finances at their households," the official said.

On that day, certain flights were grounded at LAX due to staffing shortages, leading to disruption at the fifth-busiest terminal in the nation and among the most crowded in the world, as well as additional travel extending upward to the city of Oakland, California.

The Federal Aviation Administration notice was issued at 8:45 AM in the morning on Sunday. Many flights were operating normally by midday.

Flights at Newark Liberty International Airport, though, were delayed an mean of over an hour due to personnel issues, and the authority said DFW, the second most active airport in the country, could encounter difficulties from reduced staff later in the day.

The situation comes ahead of Game 3 of the World Series, which is due to be played in LA on Monday night, and approximately four weeks prior to the Thanksgiving break, one of the busiest times to travel by air in the United States.

Strain on US air travel contributed to ending a federal closure in 2019. Back then, the halt had reached its fifth week and affected flight services, including aviator instruction.

It led several air traffic controllers to remain absent on the identical date on 25 January 2019, briefly halting travel at New York's LaGuardia airport.
