England's Assistant Coach Reveals His Vision: For England, the Jersey Must Be a Cape, Not Protective Gear.
In the past, Anthony Barry was playing at a lower division club. Currently, he is focused supporting Thomas Tuchel claim the World Cup trophy in the upcoming tournament. The road from player to coach started with a voluntary role coaching youngsters. Barry reflects, “Evening sessions, a partial pitch, organizing 11-a-side … deflated balls, scarce bibs,” and it captivated him. He realized his calling.
Staggering Ascent
The coach's journey is incredible. Commencing in a senior role at Wigan, he established a name with creative training and excellent people skills. His club career led him to elite sides, while also serving in coaching jobs abroad across multiple countries. He's coached legends including Thiago Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Cristiano Ronaldo. Today, as part of Team England, it’s full-time, the top according to him.
“All begins with a vision … But I’m a believer that passion overcomes challenges. You dream big but then you bring it down: ‘How do we do it, gradually?’ Our goal is the World Cup. However, vision doesn't suffice. It's essential to develop a methodical process enabling us to have the best chance.”
Focus on Minutiae
Passion, focusing on tiny aspects, characterizes his journey. Putting in long hours all the time, they both challenge limits. Their strategies include player analysis, a strategy for high temperatures for the World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico, and fostering teamwork. The coach highlights “Team England” and rejects terms including "pause".
“This isn't a vacation or a pause,” he explains. “We had to build something that attracts the squad and where they're challenged that going back is a relief.”
Driven Leaders
Barry describes himself and the head coach as extremely driven. “Our goal is to master all parts of the match,” Barry affirms. “We want to conquer every metre of the pitch and that's our focus most of our time to. Our responsibility to not only anticipate of changes but to beat them and set new standards. It's an ongoing effort focused on finding solutions. And it’s to make the complex clear.
“We get 50 days alongside the squad ahead of the tournament. We need to execute a sophisticated style that offers a strategic upper hand and we have to make it so clear in that period. It’s to take it from thought to data to know-how to performance.
“To build a methodology for effective use in the 50 days, we must utilize the entire 500 days we'll have since we took the job. When the squad is away, it's vital to develop bonds with each player. We have to spend time communicating regularly, we have to see them in stadiums, understand them, connect with them. If we just use the 50 days, it's impossible.”
Final Qualifiers
He is getting ready for the final pair of World Cup qualifiers – versus Serbia in London and in Albania. England have guaranteed qualification by winning all six games without conceding a goal. However, they won't relax; instead. Now is the moment to build on the team's style, for further momentum.
“Thomas and I are both pretty clear that the style of play should represent all the positives about the Premier League,” Barry explains. “The fitness, the versatility, the physicality, the honesty. The England jersey must be difficult to earn but light to wear. It ought to be like a superhero's cape instead of heavy armour.
“To ensure it's effortless, we have to give them a style that allows them to play freely similar to weekly matches, that resonates with them and allows them to take the handbrake off. They must be stuck less in thinking and more in doing.
“There are morale boosts available to trainers in attack and defense – playing out from the back, closing down early. Yet, in the central zone of the pitch, those 24 metres, we feel the game has become stuck, particularly in the Premier League. Everybody has so much information currently. They understand tactics – mid-blocks, deep blocks. Our aim is to focus on accelerating the game across those 24 metres.”
Passion for Progress
His desire to get better is all-consuming. When he studied for the Uefa pro licence, he had concerns about the presentation, as his cohort contained luminaries such as Frank Lampard and Michael Carrick. So, to build his skill set, he entered tough situations available to him to practise giving them. One was HMP Walton locally, and he trained detainees in a football drill.
Barry graduated as the best in his year, and his research paper – about dead-ball situations, where he studied 16,154 throw-ins – was published. Lampard included impressed and he recruited the coach to his team at Stamford Bridge. When Frank was fired, it spoke volumes that the team dismissed most of his staff but not Barry.
His replacement with the club took over, and shortly after, they secured European glory. When he was let go, Barry stayed on under Graham Potter. However, when Tuchel returned at Munich, he got Barry out from Chelsea to rejoin him. The FA see them as a double act similar to Southgate and Holland.
