England to Start Euro 2028 Journey at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium

The England national team will embark on their Euro 2028 adventure at the the home of Manchester City, assuming they attain the anticipated qualification for a competition taking place in the majority of the UK and the Irish Republic.

The Etihad Stadium has not welcomed an England men’s fixture since eight years ago, when the visitors were overcome 2-1 in a friendly, but is highly likely to host the Three Lions for their opening fixture on June 10, 2028.

England are planned to play their final two group matches at Wembley, but, in the event of winning their group, their last-16 tie would occur at the Newcastle stadium. Securing the runner-up spot would mean beginning the knockouts at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Competition Launch and Rally

The event was launched at an event in a London landmark on Wednesday evening. High-ranking officials from Uefa and the host football associations were heckled as they entered the venue by around fifty pro-Palestine demonstrators, who called for Israel to be expelled from the sport because of the conflict in Gaza.

Banners were raised with messages reading “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while activists shouted: “Kick Israel out.”

Event Timeline

The inaugural fixture of the European Championship will be held at the Cardiff’s stadium in Cardiff, on a Friday in June 2028, a match that will involve Wales if they qualify.

Wembley will host both semi-finals and the title decider, which will be played on a Sunday in July 2028 with a commencement at late afternoon.

It is anticipated that an afternoon start, which will also be adopted for UEFA Champions League finals from next season, will attract family audiences and help reach a wider spectrum of fans.

Host Nations

The Ireland are due to play their first game at the Dublin stadium and the Scottish team would follow suit at Hampden Park.

The national sides of all four hosts will participate in the qualification process; two automatic spots will be set aside for any that fail to qualify for the finals through the standard process.

Locations and Elimination Phase

Aston Villa’s stadium and The North London arena complete the nine tournament locations. Each one will hold at least one knockout match, with the quarterfinal matches staged at every host’s main arena.

The qualifying draw will be staged in Belfast, which was dropped as a tournament location last year when it emerged the proposed venue could not be redeveloped in time, on a date in late 2026.

Leadership Comment

“The event will be a tournament for the followers and a showcase of everything we love about the sport – its fervor and ability to foster unity.”

More than three million admissions, a all-time high for a UEFA European Championship, are anticipated to be made available to supporters.
