Democrats Denounce Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Execution

Lawmakers from the Democratic party expressed fury after the ex-president charged a coalition of Democratic legislators of being "betrayers" and declared they should be detained and punished "through capital punishment" following their release of a disputed video.

The Message That Provoked the Debate

The video footage, shared on Tuesday, showcases six Democratic lawmakers who formerly worked in military or intelligence capacities.

"Like us, you all made an vow to defend and uphold this founding document," the officials declared in the 90-second video. "And right now, the dangers to our democratic foundation are not only from abroad, but from within our own country. Our regulations are explicit, you can reject improper directives, you can reject illegal orders, you should refuse unlawful commands. No one has to carry out directives that violate the legal system or our national charter."

Donald Trump's Incensed Reply

The recorded statement reportedly prompt a angry reply from the previous commander-in-chief.

On later in the week, Trump published on his social media platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In a separate message, he wrote: "This is really concerning, and Harmful to our United States. Their statements cannot be allowed to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a third publication, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also shared a comment that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Opposition Officials Respond

Following Trump's remarks on that day, House Democratic leader published a unified announcement denouncing the remarks.

"Political violence has no role in the United States," they declared. "Congress members who participated in the video all served our nation with exceptional patriotism and excellence. We unequivocally censure Donald Trump's disgusting and dangerous threats of violence against elected officials, and appeal to Republican lawmakers to vigorously do the same."

The party representatives also stated that they had been in touch with security officials "to guarantee the protection of these officials and their relatives."

"Donald Trump must right away remove these radical digital publications and recant his aggressive discourse before he gets someone killed," the statement continued.

Lawmakers' Firm Answer

The officials who appeared in the video also published a statement.

"We identify as veterans and defense specialists who love this nation and swore an vow to protect and uphold the founding document of the United States," they declared. "Our pledge lasts a lifetime, and we aim to keep it. No intimidation, intimidation, or incitement will stop us from that important obligation."

"What's most telling is that the president deems it subject to penalty by death for us to restate the statutes," they continued. "Military personnel should understand that we have their protection as they fulfill their pledge to the founding principles and responsibility to obey only proper directives. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our duty."

They continued: "The entire nation must join forces and censure the ex-president's calls for our murder and political violence. This is a moment for principled stance."

Further Partisan Reactions

The Democratic Senate minority leader also condemned Trump's remarks and published on digital platforms: "It's important to understand: the ex-commander in chief is requesting the capital punishment of elected officials."

He continued: "This is an outright THREAT. All senators, all representatives, all citizens – without partisan consideration – should condemn this right away and absolutely."

The Republican House speaker defended Trump's assertion that the Democrats had engaged in "treason", describing the video as "highly unsuitable", commenting: "It is very harmful, you have prominent officials of Congress telling soldiers to defy commands, I think that represents historic in US history."

The Republican leader also reportedly told the press that in what he examined of Trump's publications, Trump was "describing the crime of rebellion" but that "lawyers have to parse the terminology and determine all that."

Executive Branch Statement

During a White House press conference on Thursday afternoon, when asked by a media member, "Is the president want to kill members of Congress?", the White House press secretary replied: "Certainly not."

"Let's be clear about what the former president is responding to," the representative said. "There are sitting members of the American legislature who conspired to arrange a digital communication to individuals of the US military, to current military personnel urging them to disobey the president's legal commands."

She added: "The purity of our armed forces depends on the hierarchy, and if that system is violated, it can result in fatalities, it can cause disorder, and that is exactly what these elected officials ... are essentially encouraging."
