British Designer Antony Price, Famed for Designing for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the influential British fashion designer who crafted many legendary styles associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has passed away aged 80.
Price was best known for his architectural shapes and performative fashion, including the soft-colored suits that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "the song Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement online."
Price's death comes just weeks after he debuted his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. The performer Lily Allen showcased a dress inspired by the famous black velvet "dress" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Lasting Legacy
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to enroll at the renowned Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he commenced his career designing men's fashion at the label Stirling Copper and was responsible for the form-fitting, button-fly pants that rock legend Mick Jagger wore during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.
He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show was launched by looks from model Jerry Hall, who later wore the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A key creative partner of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the distinctive jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to merge menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in crafting sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "true original," according to the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he began working on outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, such as various looks for her American tour after becoming Duchess.
With a vocation that covered half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London just last month in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.
