Astronaut Reveals Mental Health Struggle Following Deluge of Backlash Following Journey

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her battle with depression after enduring a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

Amanda Nguyen – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in the spring, which also carried well-known figures.

The much-publicized journey was met with derision by some, who challenged its value and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” the astronaut shared in a public message, describing a phone call from a mission companion in the period after the flight.

She described the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she confessed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in female health science and conducted tests during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – including her studies and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her background – was overshadowed under the tide of gendered attacks.

She is best known for her tireless campaigning fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.

Her own goal of reaching space was paused after surviving a rape during her college days, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

Finding Solid Ground

In the time since achieving her goal, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the followers whose support helped save her. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.

She added that amid the criticism, important benefits had come out of the experience, such as increased focus on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

The Historic Journey

The fully automated New Shepard rocket departed its launch site in April, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that exceeded the internationally recognized boundary of space.

The team of pioneers also included accomplished professionals from various fields.

The venture behind the mission is a commercial aerospace company founded by a well-known tech mogul.
