Acclaimed Actress Diane Ladd, Celebrated For Her Performance in Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, Has Died at Age 89.

This Academy Award-nominated actress the celebrated Diane Ladd left us aged 89.

The star, whose roles spanned National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, died at her home at her Ojai, California home. This announcement was revealed via an announcement from her offspring, Oscar-winning actor Laura Dern, her daughter.

Her daughter, who appeared with her mom in several movies including Wild at Heart and Rambling Rose, called her “my wonderful hero and my profound gift as a mother”, stating that she was by her side when she passed.

“She was the greatest mother, daughter, grandmother, performer, creative as well as compassionate soul that seemed almost dreamlike,” she wrote. “We were lucky to have her. She is now with the angels.”

Initial Roles and Major Success

Ladd’s early career saw minor parts in TV shows like Perry Mason and the 1970s had her appearing next to actor Jack Nicholson in the classic Chinatown.

In the same year, the year 1974, she performed with Ellen Burstyn in Martin Scorsese’s praised film the movie Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore. The performance landed Ladd an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actress.

Later Decades

During the eighties, she appeared in the dramatic film the movie Black Widow plus funny follow-up National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation and also took part in the show Alice, a sitcom based on Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.

In the following decade, she was given an additional Oscar nomination for supporting actress nomination for her performance in Lynch’s the movie Wild at Heart where she acted as the mother of her biological child Dern’s character. A year later she obtained another nomination for her role in Rambling Rose which also starred Dern.

“This was the film which Princess Diana picked as her top choice, and she flew us to the UK for a royal premiere and a party for us,” Ladd shared regarding Rambling Rose. “She positioned herself between us, taking our hands, with tears, viewing our performance.”

That decade featured performances in humorous films Cemetery Club joining her again with her co-star Burstyn, Primary Colors, a political story, a satirical film, starring John Travolta and the film by Alexander Payne Citizen Ruth, a dark comedy where she acted as the mother of Dern again. That period also brought her Emmy nominations for performances on Dr Quinn, Grace Under Fire, a sitcom and Touched by an Angel.

Collaborations with Daughter

She kept appearing with Laura Dern in films blending humor and drama Daddy and Them, the David Lynch project the movie Inland Empire and the series by Mike White comedy-drama series the program Enlightened. She also appeared with actress Sandra Bullock in 28 Days, Anthony Hopkins, a legend in that movie plus Jennifer Lawrence in Joy, a biographical drama.

Her later TV roles featured Ray Donovan, a drama and Young Sheldon, a comedy.

Filmmaking Ventures

Ladd also wrote and oversaw the humorous movie the movie Mrs Munck that included Diane Ladd and previous spouse Bruce Dern, an actor. “Bruce is an excellent performer,” she mentioned. “It was a privilege to guide him on a project. Actually, I’m the only woman in recorded history who directed her former husband. I make a joke: ‘I say ladies, if you want revenge, helm a movie with your ex.’ But I’m only kidding.”

Family Ties

Ladd was also a relative of the great Tennessee Williams, whom she described as “a great influence in my life”.

During 2018, she received an incorrect diagnosis with lung disease and told she only had half a year left but made a full recovery after her daughter transferred her to a different hospital.

“Should you harness your suffering and avoid letting it accumulate like a sore or something, rather utilize it to investigate, to clarify the journey for you and those around, then you are succeeding,” Ladd remarked.
